Speaking as an herbalist, I can tell you that dried botanical material can be pretty hard to identify. That is why proper labeling is a must. And since not all medicinal herbs are friendly and some are toxic with very specific uses required, you must be sure as to what herbs you have.

Personally, I would refuse to use anything I couldn't verify 100% that wasn't from a source I trusted. And asking on the Internet for identification wouldn't fit the verification bill for me. I would suggest asking the source/person you got this from for the **scientific name** or if you have to perhaps its Ayurvedic name and make your decisions from there.

It does come from a source trusted by family and another family member has actually improved on the same herb. They have a local name for it which I do not know..I was just hoping to find the botanical name before using it - so I could research more.

I totally get the toxic part - the reason I haven't used it yet.

Can it be osha root by any chance? Not sure if ot can also grow in India.

Osha is a North American plant. I wouldn't guess it to be used in traditional Indian herbal remedies.
