It looks very much like the egg case of a Mantis.

P.S. I should add that it is old and empty now.

yes, i think that that is what it is.

it is empty already? it was found on a wall! about one arm length from some plants. and it is empty already? i wonder where they went, since they would be so tiny.

they certainly can't fly to those plants, etc.

it looks scary even though it is not big.

I got the impression from the photo that it was an old empty one, but I could be wrong. The eggs are laid in autumn and the eggs hatch in spring.

If the case appears to have open holes, then they are long gone, remembering that the case holds many, many eggs, up to hundreds in fact.

Unfortunately, if it still had eggs in it, they may be compromised by the removal from the wall.

they can certainly fly... as an adult for sure ...
