Thanks, I wonder what kind of baby pine tree it is now? It has not done a thing for two weeks. I moved out of the shade into a sunny area, but that did not change anything.

May need another pic later. That terminal bud doesn't look right for a pine. Almost looks like rounded leaves forming.

Growth not likely in winter, especially after transplanting, have patience.

I just googled baby pine tree on image search and you are right, it does not look as pointy and has less leaves then the baby pine tree. It may be another kind of tree. I hope its not a weed tree. I hope its something good, maybe its a redwood?

Oh, but I live San Francisco and winters are so mild that they are the same as summers, but I guess, yes it must be slow. It was in complete 100 percent shade where it came up, so I assumed the lack of sun means it was stunted. The temps are 50s to 70s in the winter, and in the summer.

Too immature, need to look at it farther along when more characteristic leaves are present - it could be something else such as a Cedrus, which is abundant in west coast plantings. What do you have nearby? Maybe the parent tree is right there.

It came up on the shady side under a tree fern. I have a dwarf blue spruce and a dwarf black Japanese pine Pinus thunbergii âÂÂthunderheadâÂÂ. An Asian pink Magnolia and a gingko tree, but that is all I have in the yard. And it was not near any of those trees, but I compost things from the yard back into the soil, so it could have traveled.
