white rhizome, white bloom

wild invasive weed. white rhizome, white bloom, multiplies by both rhizome and seed. About 1 to 1 1/2" long green leaves. the plant grows from 8" to about 18" tall. square stem. square stem whorls serrated green leaf. It could be a GROUND ELDER - Aegopodium podagraria.
I tried to dig this plant up with a transplanting fork but the white tiny roots are hard to seed and get rid of. I would like to know what is a safe herbicide to use to get rid of this invasive plant.
I have another photo of the top part but gardenweb only allow me to post one photo at this time.
Thanks for your time and help.

I'd bet just about anything that it's Stachys floridana! AKA Florida betony or rattlesnake weed. We have a lot of that here, too.

If that is what it is, those white tubers, which look like rattlesnake rattles, are *edible.* So if you're going to bother to dig it up, eat it (after being certain of proper ID). See: http://www.eattheweeds.com/florida-betony-150-a-pound/

If you have a lot of this, in my area at least (SE Louisiana) it tends to bloom in spring and fall. Square stems, opposite leaves, pale purplish flowers at the top, looks rather like mint but doesn't smell like it. See link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: Stachys floridana

Ditto Stachys floridana, a very common southern weed.
