Hi & welcome to GW! Kalanchoe is what I think when I look at this, though fuzzy leaves don't fit so well with that. Maybe the fuzz is some kind of pest? Webbing from spider mites? I'm not sure this can be rehabilitated as the roots may be rotted.

i would try rooting some pieces.. as a last ditch effort at saving it ... perhaps the wise folks int eh houseplant forum could give you some ideas how to root and unknown plant ... and it surely is not cutting off the new stems ...

otherwise.. sorry to say.. i would throw it away ... and 'tell off' the alleged friend who gave you this job ... lol ...

Purpleinopp, I had already looked up kalanchoes, but the leaves looked very different from the common variety. After your reply, I looked it up some more and my friend confirmed that the plant, in its better days, looked like the kalanchoe shown here: http://cja-agriculture.blogspot.ca/2013/11/indoor-plants-for-winter.html (the first plant photo). I'm not sure what variety is that, but now I know at least what I'm looking at.

Ken, I started some cuttings and just repotted it. You were right about the roots, and the plant had some bugs that I just noticed today (tiny flies and some crawling green bugs). Some parts of the plant show signs of life and I'm willing to try some more.
