Thanks! Do you mean you put them in lots of sun? How big do these get in the ground? These Alternantheras are a confusing bunch.

Sorry purp, Ken is right, i'm in the South west of England. But yes I used primarily this plant in various colours. Here is a link of what I used to do. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=floral+clock+weston+super+mare&hl=en& client=safari&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=3nIaUeGRDafZ0QXnxoGIA w&ved=0CDUQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=644

Thedecoguy - ha, so you were/are in Weston? Not a million miles from me.

Thedecoguy, wow that's incredibly cool! Thanks for the link. Inspirational. I mean wow. Thanks, Ken. I saw that in his profile and am not sure how that translates to hot, sunny AL (31 degrees latitude, btw.) Will prob. be fine with morning sun, like almost all of the others.

listen to me purp.. there is a reason they are a pasty people ... crimminey.. even in full sun.. they barely tan ... in fact.. they grow hosta in full sun ... or they dont color right ... mid MI is 45 degrees north ... and they are another 15 degrees ... to give you some perspective .... i learned this the hard way.. when i bought a British hosta book that claimed every single hosta was full sun .. so i ran out there and moved them into full sun.. they prospered wildly ... and multiplied like rabbits.. but by august.. were mostly burned to the ground ... so i moved the larger plants back into afternoon shade ... ken

Ken, I just realized you're from Livonia. I was born and raised in Michigan. I've lived in Warren, Detroit, Royal Oak, Troy, Sterling Heights, Algonac, West Branch, Hazel Park, Centerline, Utica, Alpena, Mt. Clemens, New Baltimore, Chesterfield Twp, West Bloomfield, Rochester, and Southfield... in that order! Nice weather you're having. ;) *She says as she fans herself with the doors open because it's 72 degrees right now, at 7pm*

LOL! Cracking up about the British Hosta book! Thanks. I think people often don't give enough consideration to latitude... Only been to London once, in April, and sure enough, it was cloudy and cool. I never mind a hijack, even if it's to talk about MI... wishing you luck in getting out someday, Ken!

Shear - talking about places like Livonia, Troy, Rochester, Utica, and West Bloomfield, it sounds like you are talking NY instead of MI. We have all those places here too. ;) The Weston Floral Clock link didn't work as cut and pasted. Here's the google search link below. Wow, 20,000 flowers to make it. That is a clock! FataMorgana

Fata, every time someone says "Rochester" or "Utica" or "Troy" around here, I get all excited until they say "New York." I fall for it every time, thinking I've found another Michigander-slash-Michiganian. I want Thedecoguy to come do MY yard. *sigh*

Parrot heads unite! "...I really do appreciate the fact you're sitting here Decoguy, you're welcome in my yard too. That clock thing is definitely one of the most amazing "plant things" I've ever seen. AND the challenge of doing it on such a steep slope. Wow man!

Thanks Purp/Shear But perched on a ladder resting over the clock face for 8 hrs a day for near on 2 weeks doesn't quite have the appeal it once had(My backs not as supple). All plants had to have their rootball "rolled" into a cylinder shape so they could be planted by a dibber. I done that for 7 years. Its a shame, because when i done the clock it was designed, drawn and planted by hand, the last few years( to save money) it was designed by computer, and came in a kit form. Like a giant jigsaw, which was laid on the clock from trays. It was just another 'death nail' in what is already a dying trade. This year they are not bothering at all.

See, I don't even know what a dibber is. (Doing the "bow down wave" at TDG!) We're not worthy! But such a sad end to the story. By the time I got to "kit" I was tearing up. Seriously, where's that barmaid?! Maybe another Jimmy song will cheer things back up... I was feelin the blues He said Im tellin you That got me goin Now Im on a roll So bring me two pina coladas Troubles I forgot em

I've been trying to get "Why Don't We Get Drunk" out of my head for two hours. Now it's gonna' be "Two Pina Coladas," I just know it. Next it will be "Day-O" or "Toes." Just watch.
