Plant not doing so well... need identification

Hi,

I recently acquired a large house plant from a friend and have no idea what exactly it is. Recently it has not been doing so well... the color has been getting much darker and the leaves are browning/ dropping like crazy. Any help with the indentity and care of this plant would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The leaves will drop if they are not being fully utilized, i.e., not receiving enough light to make them worth keeping. In low light situations, I've seen 13ft of bare trunk before a scant 1-2 ft of top leaves. Contrarily, in high light, and with abundant regular fertilizer, I've seen them "fully clothed" with leaves. Your plant is NOT dying, as far as it looks and is described in the photo, but simply shutting down "factories" that it costs more to keep than they are worth. I hope this helps. BTW, the leaves, once dropped from the trunk, will never re-sprout, so if you like the fuller look, move the plant outside, in full morning sun, during the year, and in front of a nice, big, south-facing window every winter. Also, remember to fertilize when it is actively growing.
