These lily bulbs have been in the family since 1953 and passed down to me from my m-i-l. They appear to be some type of amaryllis lily. They are supposed to bloom at Easter and Christmas (if conditions are right). She used to let them die back and go dormant without watering them after Christmas blooming. I need more info on their care. She passed away, and I have to keep them going! Thanks!

These are the common Amaryllis grown all over Costa Rica. Ours are presently in bloom. Very easy to grow. Even with the heat, wind and extremely dry periods they can be counted on to blossom. Unfortunately, the name changes with whoever you are speaking with ...but I think it is Hippeastrum elegans var divifrancisci. Even at the best nurseries, the plants all are advertised only with their common name, in Spanish of course and in this case Lirios

Actually, they are called Amaryllis, but are really Hippeastrum. Mine are just starting to show foliage, when was your pic taken? After bloom, the bulbs need several months with leaves to make food. In the fall, I let mine go dry, and when the foliage is dead I pull it off, then repot if needed. When you see flowers (they show first) starting, commence to water and feed. Maybe somebody has a different regimen for them, I'm certain different areas treat them differently. But the foliage needs to live a few months to make next year's bloom. Also, never bury the bulb, they will disappear.

The bulbs here are usually buried....so it's a surprise when they 'reappear' sometimes in the middle of a lawn, and possibly because our location, the leaves are always seen first, and not just on this variety but others also.

Costa, you realize we may be talking different species, right? There are some that grow completely out of the soil like epiphytes, some that are completely buried, and the ones commonly sold as houseplants. Some sites recommend 1/3 of the bulb protruding, some 1/2, but the sites that treat them as houseplants all agree that the bulb should not be buried. L2P, can you see the bulbs well? Or are they the ones that should be buried. If gramma kept them buried, then so should you. If she has the ones that look like they want to fall over, then you should also. I doubt the plant would have made it 60 years if cultural conditions were wrong. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/hil/hil-8529.html

I think it may be Hippeastrum striatum, Barbados lily, orange lily. By the way, I found your same photo being used on this blog post about growing an amaryllis from seed. (Scroll down.)

take pix. .. of the media.. when bare.. the pot.. depth of planting.. and there will be your future guide to how g-ma 'kept' them ... we can only guess ... a closeup of the flower might help these two define the ID .... but the most important fact will be PROPER WATERING ... of which i never perfected.. and you already know the key from g-ma ... DRYING after bloom ... you have to force it into dormancy.. to trigger food storage.. and then rest.. and then new growth for new flower ... but too much water.. will probably rot the bulbs ... can an expert discuss such??? and what i do with precious stuff.. next dormancy.. get in there with a tablespoon .. and get a few out ... and propagate them ... which means put in separate pots.. so if one gets screwed up.. you have extras.. relying on one pot.. is potential doom ... ken

Hippeastrum striatum is right! I knew I had seen it under another name, on the 'net before, but couldn't find it again, and I hadn't updated my plant list! I have also grown some different varieties from seed.
