My elderly mother brought me this plant, no idea what it is but its sitting in water for days. The leaf part where the spikes protrude is very hard. I don't want to plant it in the wrong soil (learned the hard way with a Jade). Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated, thanks you kindly. :)

Ouch!! What you have there is a light starved over watered Aloe vera plant. Plant in cactus mix, similar to Jade Plant and water sparingly, about every 3 wks to once a month. Slowly introduce it to light until it gets full sun. Likes to be hot and dry. If you like, you can cut it into sections and propagate it. Just let the cuttings air out and callus for a day or so and plant. You may want to get it a little healthier first, though.

Wow really?! She has several Aloe Vera plants, she said she didn't know what this was. It was in pretty bad shape when she first got it so this is it a little healthier. Thanks very much, I didn't imagine I'd get a response so quick!

Aloe has a medicinal quality. It is good for minor burns and abrasions. Just break off a leaf and rub juice over affected area. Also good in shakes for ulcers.
