What did the bulbs look like?

I think I agree with Fatamorgana because in my experience slugs and snails don't touch Spanish Bluebells, Hyacinthoides hispanica, but they will chew on Hyacinths. (Nor do they eat native bluebells, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, but I'm pretty certain your plants aren't those.) However, Irish gastropods may have different habits.

Not hyacinth bc I have a few of them sprouting in my garden. These are smaller. The tops of the bulb sprouts are chewed on by hens

In which case I'd go for Spanish Bluebells, Hyacinthoides hispanica. Can be a bit rampant.

Alternatively they could be Hyacinths which have been in the garden a few years. They tend to split into smaller bulbs and become less robust as the years go by.
