| Possibly - but picture not really clear enough. Where is this growing? Osmanthus heterophyllus is another possibility. |

| Whatever that stuff is, it's really hard to kill, and has very painfully prickly leaves, especially after they turn brown. |

| It is not Mahonia - I'm pretty certain about that. Those leaves are not pinnate. And I'm not sure there are two plants. Many hollies and the Osmanthus I mentioned have both smooth and prickly leaves on the same plant. That's what the 'heterophyllus' bit means. |

| You could well be right Salt. Peering closely they do look alternate. Osmanthus clearly a red herring. Sorry. A clearer picture would certainly help us along a bit. |

I thought about Osmanthus too- actually a few of these pictures he posted could be Osmanthus. It seems that there may be a theme of fragrant shrub to these pictures. |
