Possibly - but picture not really clear enough. Where is this growing? Osmanthus heterophyllus is another possibility.

RE: holly?

Whatever that stuff is, it's really hard to kill, and has very painfully prickly leaves, especially after they turn brown.

RE: holly?

Ilex or Mahonia.-- there's 2 plants here though...

 o
RE: holly?

It is not Mahonia - I'm pretty certain about that. Those leaves are not pinnate. And I'm not sure there are two plants. Many hollies and the Osmanthus I mentioned have both smooth and prickly leaves on the same plant. That's what the 'heterophyllus' bit means.

RE: holly?

FloraUK aren't the leaves alternate ruling out Osmanthus?

 o
RE: holly?

You could well be right Salt. Peering closely they do look alternate. Osmanthus clearly a red herring. Sorry.

A clearer picture would certainly help us along a bit.

RE: holly?

I thought about Osmanthus too- actually a few of these pictures he posted could be Osmanthus.
It seems that there may be a theme of fragrant shrub to these pictures.
