That's one of the Perillas. Looks like Perilla frutescens Crispa.

Really not possible to say from that pic, could be either.

If the foliage is highly aromatic, then Perilla. I've not noticed coleus having that property.

I based my ID on the coloration of the leaves on the branch in the lower left of the picture.

Just tore & sniffed (the plant version of scratch'n'sniff?) Perilla 'Magilla' and several Coleus leaves. Some of the Coleus are more pungent to me than the Perilla. The way all of these plants can have wildly varying colors depending on the amount and intensity of light makes ID'ing even more tricky. Once they get separated from the tag, there are over 2,000 Coleus possibilities alone. I don't think I can determine the name of this one anymore. OP's pic reminds me of it, when it is in less sun.

Perilla 'Magilla' is a hybrid that does not have the strong scent of the straight species, Perilla frutescens, which is highly aromatic. -It smells something like basil mixed with mint and cinnamon.

Aha, ty, Susan. AFAIK, I've not had other Perillas. (Actually a purple plant I don't want.) Forgot to say above, the Coleus pic I linked was the one that had a pungent odor, but nothing I would describe as basil, mint, or cinnamon. Just kind of earthy, but describing smells is not my forté.

Describing scents is hard. The Herbs forum is one of my usual haunts and seeing people describing scents (and tastes) over the years of herbs is always interesting. Our language is often inadequate for the description plus combine that with different experiences with the same type of plant - we don't all taste and smell the same things, and it is hard for a good description. When I first saw this picture I thought Perilla frutescens as well but I can see where it looks like a Coleus as well. If the OP can offer some history, background, or scents associated with this plant, it may help tip the scales in favor of one or the other of these plants. FataMorgana
