Shield shaped leaf-no flower seen-ID help needed

Shield shaped leaves were in a wooded, heavily shaded area, marshy soil, taken in May, the plant was only ever observed in May, and was presumed consumed by deer because it was never found again. No flowers or buds were ever seen.

[Will insert name of the aster family genus when I remember it] or similar.

I do believe it is Prenanthes alba. The newly, just sprouted leaves look much different than the mature ones.

I found 3 sites that showed younger plants of Prenanthes alba, and I see now why the ID was confusing. Like you mentioned, the young leaves are dramatically different than later growth. The sites do seem to confirm that these are Prenanthes alba; thanks, FataMorgana, for the lead:

Not a problem! Look later in the season for a tall plant where these had been. It is hard to believe it is the same plant.

Yes: Prenanthes is what I had in mind. Obviously it's not Prosartes.
