Help! Tried everwhere to name this plant

My father found the large version of this plant at an estate sale and no body knows what it is. I have a small one that is an off shoot from it. Lots of people say it looks like an avocado plant but I am pretty certain that it's not, the base (stem) looks nothing like avocado. Please help, it is making us crazy.
