This one is driving me crazy - it appears in the spring, this year very early (although our winter has been very mild), and forms a low growing carpet of tiny plants over a wide area of ground (pic of carpet in next post). It has a succulent feel to it, and is growing in an area where I used to garden, but eventually moved to another part of the property due to limited sun in this area. I think I remember it developing white petaled, yellow center daisy-like flowers, but not positive. This particular plant is growing on the outer edge of the mass of other tinier plants. Looks like salad to me, but I'd love to know its exact identity. Thanks in advance.

Guessing here--reminds me of Corn Salad, aka Mache,Valerianella sp. Try googling a photo and see if it rings a bell. Also check out Forget-Me- Nots, Cynoglossum sp.

I also think it is Valerianella aka Corn Salad. It self sows on my allotment, as do forget-me-nots. The latter have hirsute leaves, not smooth. The flowers of Valerianella are tiny and fairly insignificant, not daisies. Maybe you also have Bellis perennis, 'English' Daisies, which have similar leaves to Valerianella. We had corn salad last week as the first green salad of the year out of the garden.

Here is a link that might be useful: Corn Salad as an ornamental

Corn salad is grown as an ornamental??? Try putting it in your salad sometime!

Many sincere thanks to all who responded - corn salad sounds like a likely candidate (sure looks like it on G. Images) - I surely must have tried to grow corn salad in the old garden - probably tried and failed, and didn't even notice that it came up on its own at a later date. My confusion re the flowers is likely due to the fact that I know I've got Eng Daisies growing among in my lawn, and they may be in the corn salad mix as well. I think I'll move some of the bigger plants of the corn salad from their naturalized location into my new garden - maybe we can get them naturalized there! Thanks again to all - think I'll spend some time here now.
