More info.. Lower sets of leaves are from when plant was growing in mostly shade top sets of leaves are from full sun.

Leaf characteristics are (correct me if I'm wrong):
Arrangement: alternate, simple
Venation: pinnate
Shape: oval or elliptic and acute apex and base
Margin: entire
Texture: glabrous

Excuse my off-topic comment, but your zone disappeared while you were posting. I thought this gremlin was slayed, but apparently not.... The fix is usually to type it in the box manually while posting in a forum. After submitting, hopefully it will be secured permanently in place.

Just a wild guess...could it be a some kind of Eucalyptus?

I thought that as well. It looks too leathery for any Crepe Myrtle I know of.

Can you detect any aroma if you bruise a leaf?

It looks very Arbutus-like.....something in the Ericaceae, like madrone, manzanita. Red shoots and glossy, heavy textured evergreen foliage is characteristic of both the Pacific madrone and the hybrid Arbutus 'Marina'. Wouldn't think AZ would be an ideal sprouting spot for either but you never know.......

I completely forgot there's an Arizona Madrone!

Ok so in the last 3 months this plant is starting to look less like a arbutus arizonica and I have no idea what it is... It seems to be thriving in a 15 gallon pot in full sun with our 108 degree temps
