| Would like to positively identify this tree. Its fruit looks like pics I found of Pachira aquatica, commonly called Malabar chestnut, Guiana chestnut, provision tree, and saba nut. However, when I took my pics of this tree--in early February in Southern California--there were absolutely *NO* leaves on it. I cannot find a single photo online of a similar tree WITHOUT leaves but WITH a plethora of its fruit, which was green, nor do I have pictures of it with leaves to compare it to pics online. Also, this tree was nowhere near water...which makes me doubt it's actually a Pachira aquatica.
Please see my Flickr page for its photo, and you might want to view larger so you can see the fruit more clearly: |
Here is a link that might be useful: Unknown tree, possibly Pachira aquatica

| Wow...their fruits are certainly similar looking. However, my tree doesn't have the huge thorns on its branches. |
|
| 'Majestic Beauty' is a thornless cultivar. |

| You know, after taking a closer look at some other pics I took that day, I THINK the tree does have thorns on its larger branches. It's hard to tell. When I go back to the arboretum I'll take more/better pics of it--and, hopefully by then, it'll have leaves, which should make ID-ing it a bit easier! Thanks for the input so far. If anyone else has any ideas, please post. |

| The numerous thorns visible in your picture are what made it clear to me it would be very likely to be the Chorisia. This is a pretty familiar tree in your area. |

| I grew up here (in the San Gabriel Valley), and have been back now for several years after living in other states, and I don't recall EVER seeing one of these trees before! I'm not doubting you, bboy, but if they're pretty familiar around here I certainly have never noticed one before. Or perhaps I've seen them, but not while they were in fruit? That could explain why I don't recall noticing them before. Anyway, thanks for the input. I think you're right that it's Chorisia speciosa. |

| Maybe I can help, this is really a Chorisia speciosa tree, in the botanical review early this century, the re-classification is: Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna 1998, here at Brasil it called Paineira, have torns on the lower part of the tree, very rustic, produces some fiber balls like cotton inside the pods, this fiber was used to make matress and pillows 50 years ago by the people who lived in the farms.
