Fruit or nut tree ID please?

Hi everyone,

We just bought a house in the Oakland Hills after living much further out in a desert-type area!

We bought this winter and now our yard is blooming with all kinds of things.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the heck this is? Is it a fruit or nut or just an ornamental seed pod?

I asked my mother from MA who has owned a plant nursery for 30+ years and we're both stumped!

Tree is shaped like a plum family tree and is maybe 20 feet tall. Single trunk.

Thanks in advance. :)

Certainly looks like a plum to me. When the fruit are ripe the Fruit and Orchards Forum may be able to id it for you. Unless it's a seedling or sucker from a root stock.

We are in your same boat! Every day is a new discovery. I believe that is a plum. We have a mystery plum too. Ours had white blossoms.
