Tiny Mudflat Plant

These tiny plants were on a shale barrens mudflat. The largest ones were just over 1 inch tall, and highly branched. Branching appeared to occur on just one side. I found them more than a week ago, and there was little change in height when I rechecked them this morning.

The lower stem was square, and the upper branches were oval in cross-section. As you can see by the whorls in my fingers, the branches were not much thicker than a human hair. Both plants shown below had a thickened section mid-stem.
