Thanks saltcedar! I thought the way the leaves were emerging looked quite a bit like the red tipped photinias planted locally. Makes sense if it is a related plant.

Is this growing wild? or was it planted?

P. serrulata is less prone to disease than regular 'Red Tips', so should be making a resurgence. But I can't find it anywhere in nurseries here.

Dave, it was definitely bird planted. I did see one other wild growing plant near the park on the slope of a ditch, also in heavy shade.

Nowadays correctly Photinia serratifolia. Have seen it growing wild elsewhere; at first the leaf spot was primarily hammering the hybrid (P. x fraseri) here but now both parental species - including this one - are deteriorating also.

It thins them out and weakens them, like the rhododendron mildew does the more susceptible kinds of rhododendrons. In both cases the ornamental value of the shrubs is reduced markedly. And sometimes they even die.
