Tough to determine species without the flowering heads. Alopecurus pratensis (Timothy Grass) is a bit shorter than Phleum pretense (Meadow Foxtail), and it has more narrow leaves. A. pratensis does have ligules that are obtuse to truncate, while those of P. pretense are obtuse to acute. If you pull the leaf away from the stem a bit, you'll see the ligule tip which is the membrane between the leaf and top of the sheath. However, neither of those species have leaves as wide as stated in your measurements. A. pratensis leaves range 1.9 to 8 mm wide (up to 1/3 inch), and P. pretense leaves range 4 to 10 mm wide (up to 0.4 inch).

Hmmm. Thanks. Maybe it is neither A. pratensis nor P. pretense. I will have to investigate further. Maybe repost when the seed heads comes out, as well as post a picture of the whole clump. I will also look for additional specimens on my property to see if any of them are showing seed heads yet.

If anyone has some guesses of species that it COULD be, please feel free to suggest species name for me to investigate. Perennial bunching type grass with seed head similar to Timothy grass. Growing at 850 feet above seed level in mediterranean climate in coastal range of central California.
