Name That Plant!

plant ID - groundcover??

Ok, so this spring I'm reclaiming another area that had been overrun by wild plants / weeds while this home was unoccupied while being sold. Last year, I got about 1/2 of the area cleared, but pulling this stuff up is hard work. Having to dig it up, and it's in a good 6-8", if not more. Height ranges from a few inches to a foot or so. Most of them, it appears there's just as much root as there is plant above ground.
Still have no idea what it is.

This year, I'm tackling the rest by just clipping it at the ground level, and I hope I can keep it from coming up again and taking over if I can keep at it.

Here is a mass of them, just behind the flower garden (made no attempt to control these, this is a wild area of the yard). Probably other plants intertwined as well, but I believe this plant is the majority...

I was thinking in the first pic that it's a tree/bush sapling but if that last pic is any indication, that is one very prolific tree.

Heh, I thought the same, but with how much there is..

The area I've cleared is about 2/3 the size of the area pictured above. I cleared out about 1/2 of it last summer, and very little, if any, has come back (yet). Majority of that was actually pulled up.
