 o
grass id please?

(Hoping it's native)...grass clump growing on a Mt in Northern VA. Blades are curly and it doesn't *appear* to be invasive...doesn't seem to spread much. If you can't id it definitively...can you give me a genus?

Thank-you!

Little Bluestem?

Here is a link that might be useful: Schizachyrium scoparium

Or Virginia bluestem (Andropogon virginicus). Never was good at telling those two apart.

Thank-you both but not being a "grass" expert I am now confused...both look somewhat similar....how can I tell them apart?

In the link below if you scroll 1/2 down the page you see the 2 side by side...is little blue more of a "clumper" , less spread out?

Here is a link that might be useful: little bluestem next to VA bluestem

I'm thinking not Little Bluestem. My Little Bluestem has a more reddish hue to it and the blades up top are more delicate. This is a bad pic but all I have on hand at the moment. I'll see about getting a better pic.

Thanks for your input Tsuga! Yes, I see what you mean. The bluestem also seems to have a fuller look to it. This grass I'm trying to ID has a sparser appearance and def.coarser or broader blades. I also can't tell if little blue has this, but the unknown grass has a lot of curly blades. It has spread a bit on the property. Seems to like dryer areas....scrubby patches...hard to get really dry here as it's a cove forest but this grass likes gravel and sun!

Looks like Andropogon virginicus to me.

Thanks Jekeesl! I think you're right. Going w/ the idea that this grass is something I want keep...yay!! Finally, something on the property that isn't invasive or thorny :)!

I was just agreeing with texasflip.

I see. Well, I think Tsuga has me convinced that it's not little blue w/the pic...so whatever the species is, it's staying :) Thank-you all!
