brown bulb flower/ plant looks like nut

planted by neighbour who moved. it was outside all winter on front lawn. don't recall colour if there was any. about a foot tall and brown bulb about 2 half inch wide. is it toxic to my cat? is it dead?

ken, I took your suggestion and gave it a little tug and sure enough it was something on a stick. i was thinking she planted something rare. thanks ken and you too Tulsarose . after you said "walnut on a stick" i looked at my picture more critically.

the stick looked too perfectly straight.. something un-natural about it.. especially since it doesnt look stout enough to hold up its head ... lol ..

i wonder if it came with a flower arrangement.. dried ... and someone with a sense of humor stuck it in the ground ....

Yes, I think it's a tropical seed pod from an indoor arrangement.
