Hosta Identification

Angie Kaylor

I'm trying to identify this Hosta. It was a gift from my sweet Mom & was not labeled when I got it. It was by far my favorite Hosta last year. Unfortunately, I foolishly put it in a pot. Evidently, that was a bad thing (don't judge - new to gardening) and there are no signs of life. I'm heartbroken. Can you help me figure out what kind it is so that I can search for another one? Please and thanks!

Here is one more photo of it later in the year. I've lurked around here forever reading all of the helpful info. I appreciate any help you can give. :)

I'd try posting this on the Hosta forum - there are nearly 5000 registered cultivars of hosta and it takes a specialist to differentiate many of them.

As to growing in a pot?? Hostas are often grown in containers. I do so with all of mine simply to keep them out of reach of hosta-hungry slugs and snails. They make great container plants as long as you factor in the need for winter protection, if appropriate.

Don't assume your hosta is dead just because it has yet to emerge. Mine are just barely poking their red pointed eyes out of the ground.

I think that is Frances Williams but you should get more opinions over on the hosta forum, we don't bite.

Thank you all for pointing me to the Hosta forum. This was my first post, so I put it here. :)

The rest of my hosta (pots & in the ground) are going quite nicely. This one was just under the overhang of my house, so I was afraid it got too dry over the winter since it's showing no signs of life. The others (in pots) were just out from under the awning, so they got some water over the winter. This is the only one I have like this, so maybe it's just slow to grow, but the part that is showing now is all dry & crunchy (insert broken heart here).

Thanks to all. Someone on the Hosta forum says it looks like a Christmas Tree Gala. After looking up the pics, I'm pretty sure that's it. :)

to me.. it looks like xmas tree ... not xmas tree GALA .. which is heavily streaked ...

see link... that ought to entertain you for a month or so.. but you will never find a hosta that way ... you need to get name from teh H forum.. and then go look them up ...

MMan and i have been having fun in the hosta forum... so he understood it was not a cheap shot ... well.. it was.. but all in good fun ...

    ken

ps: and do understand.. though CTree is a good suggestion.. there are probably a hundred more the look alike .... that most of us cant tell apart ...

Here is a link that might be useful: link

lol...no problem, mountain man. I'll take any input & help.

Ken...oh, my goodness. Go ahead & call DHS to report me for not feeding my family for the next week due to the link you sent. I'll spend days looking through that.

But - I have to say, after looking at the Christmas tree pics on that link, I'm re-thinking it again. The leaves on those pics look 'ripply'. Mine were smoother than that...maybe due to it's young age?

I did go ahead & dump it out last night. The top part (crown?) was light brown & crunchy; however, the roots still seemed moisturized & alive...or at least they did to my non-expert eyes. I replanted it & will keep an eye on it.
