These look like the spore producing cones of horsetail, Equisetum spp

If they are what I think, then they will not be there long and will, as you say, just shrivel up. That is not the end of the story, though. These will be followed by the green, "summer" growth.
They do have some traditional medicinal use, but I would be reluctant to do much with it until I had, at the very least, identified the particular species.

Yes, horsetail I have tons and fighting to get rid of, didn't know that the early flush is coming from the same plant,..something learned! I knew about medicinal properties on horsetail,..but have no knowledge of using it.

if hit repeatedly with Round up... it can be controlled on some level ...

but i swear its root system stretches half way to the center of the earth.. and though you may tame it to a great extent.. you will never eradicate it...

if i were you.. i would just move.. lol

Here fields sprayed repeatedly with herbicide fill up with field horsetail, as thought it was encouraged by the culling out of competing weeds.

It has particular soil preferences and if the soil is modified may back off a bit in response to that. Otherwise, we are talking about a coal age plant that lived with frequent volcanic activity. At the site of the Tacoma Smelter there are piles of arsenic contaminated material with horsetail growing around them and no other plant species at all.

Roundup doesn't do it, tried for several years! There is another one,..can't remember the name but kills it all with one application!

This spot with picture is weird, I had dug a pond, the dirt was mooved to high ground and that's where all this grew!

Roundup is indeed useless because Equisetum is a living fossile and is different than an normal plant.
