First one reminds me more of Hawthorn, Crataegus, than Hazelnut, although a closer pic would help. Agree that the second one is a Serviceberry, Amelanchier.

Since BBoy chimed in I guess I better post another pic of nr 1. I don't recall the blooms because I'm sort of overwhelmed with sensory input when I look at these. There is actually another one with blooms like apple that I didn't post.

I went back today and found a very large specimen in bloom. Took some more pictures. Note: this has very large thorns, about 10 cM in length. Sorry the flowers didn't come out better.

Thanks everybody for the posts. Now, what kind of Hawthorn do you suppose it is? I think there are 271 species on the USDA site.

Yes, but not all of them are found in Minnesota. While the flowers are still there, count the number of stamens and note the anther color.

I'm really confused at what I'm seeing out there. If you notice above the leaves in 'Close up nr 1', they are quite different than leaves in 'Close up in flower'.
Are these two different species?

Do both of them have thorns, or just the bigger one?

They both have big thorns.

I took another close up today of the flowers on the Hawthorn.

Could you post more pictures of the hawthorn? They are difficult to identify (many species have very subtle differences) and having pictures of the bark, fruit, thorns, twigs, and pressed or flattened leaves would help. Photos of both sides of the leaves would help too. You may have more than one species of hawthorn in your photos, so make sure to group each photo by which tree it came from.
