This plant was in NJ open woodland where Mayapple, trout lily and Jack in the pulpit grows. But what is it?

No, it has prominent red veins and stalks, kind of like Swiss chard. But in the woods?

Fallopia can have those very features too. Red coloration of new growth, stem nodes, etc. You'll know soon enough if it's that invasive plant.
