I have seen several of these plants on the side of the road across from my house. The leaves have purple looking spines and the long center stem is taller than I am and looks like it will bloom. Anyone know what this is and if its invasive???

Probably a nightshade family plant.

Looks like kidney-leaved rosinweed, Silphium compositum. A nice plant, has a huge potato-like root, drought tolerant and a very tall flower spike in summer which butterflies like.
