I have been holding back on this one because it is proving so frustrating. I cannot reconcile it with any UK wild plant that I know. Can I ask some more questions?
Could you post a picture of the location you found it in? Surrounding plants might provide a clue. Also could you say if any herbicides have been used round the back of the shed? I am wondering if it is an aberrant form of something. And finally could you either describe or show the roots?

I've never seen May Apple, Podophyllum peltatum. It's not native here and is very unusual in gardens available only from specialist nurseries. But it's a possibility.

This one's intriguing.

Astrantia?

Astrantia was something I thought of too but the leaves seem rather deformed if it is that. More pictures at a later stage are needed.

Hi again, Grice. I just went out in the dusk and grovelled around looking at the base of my Astrantia and there is a similarity. Have you got Astrantia anywhere else in the garden?

And a lovely healthy specimen of it. Thanks for coming back to us with the end of the story. Astrantia major - a nice garden plant but also a (rare) British native.
