Vine with buds

A neighbor was pulling these out and asked if I wanted them. Can you identify them? They smell a bit like sweet pea, have a redness near the bottom of the the vines and had been growing over an old rickety trellis... they have buds that are getting close to flowering... Picture attached

What color were the flowers?

RE: Vine with buds

No flowers yet... just green buds. Mine (in a sunnier location) have already bloomed, but his were in the back in a shadier spot... or maybe just different varieties which bloom at different times?

I also think they are Clematis.

carol, flora, thanks! That is my best guess too, I transplanted them next to my own clematis and we will see if they make it! Thanks for the help!
