Can you photograph the entire plant? Is it a vine? or more upright plant? Tree or perrenial?

Looks like my scarlet hibiscus, Hibiscus coccineus.

Hollow stems and foliage like that means one of the hibiscus, to me.

I have an Hibiscus Coccineus Alba that bloomed today for the first time. Moved it this year from a rather arid part of the garden where it barely stayed alive - for years!

Have looked lots of places for an answer to my question. The plant is over 5' tall, super healthy looking, but this is the only bud that has formed. I've thrown some Milorganite to it a few times, watered occasionally.

Hoping someone can tell me how to get it to bloom more. The white flower is gorgeous...........and sadly will be gone tomorrow.

It is sometimes sold as a water garden plant. I had one for many years and wasn't able to get it to flower every year. It was rather slow to get going in the spring and would usually only flower in late summer. This was in zone 6 in NY so it was probably due to the short growing season. Perhaps watering is an issue in your case. It will grow quite happily with the roots fully submerged.

lycopus, what you say makes sense. Its common name is swamp hibiscus. Will try to figure out how to replant with roots submerged. No idea now how to do this, but hope I can figure it out.

rosiew, you could sink a pot in the ground (one without holes) or line the planting hole with black plastic. That would at least hold the water longer.

lycopus and esh, thanks again for all your info. I didn't even know what this was until Plant Idents on Facebook ID'd it for me a couple of weeks ago.

Further reading tells me to transplant in Spring (this from Clemson U.). I have a large pot that I can bury and fill with water retentive soil. And a great spot to plant it which feels perfect to me.

In zone 8, I wouldn't hesitate to move or divide it in fall either, though I will agree that just before or maybe as the new growth starts (though you'll probably break lots of stems if you wait) in the spring is probably the ideal time.
