Backyard plant 1: Barren Strawberry??

I have this spread pretty widely in the abandoned corner of the backyard in our new house... It does look like barren strawberries although the leaves look a little different from the pictures I find. Please help!!

Looks like mock strawberry, potentilla indica.

How is it different from barren strawberry and is this considered a kind of weed?

P indica is pretty weedy, is seedy and has little or no flavour. Barren Strawberry has white flowers and is Potentilla sterilis.

I don't think Potentilla sterilis is established in the US. Here we tend to refer to Waldsteinia fragarioides as barren strawberry, which is an early flowering woodland plant that doesn't look much like strawberry at all.
