help! exotic something needs id

Almost one year in this house, and new things are always popping up. We discovered this growing in a field of freeway daisies and ground cover on our front slope.

It's hard to see this odd thing, but it seems to have clumps of buds about 4" in diam surrounded by long green spikey leaves. So far it is just green, but it may bloom a color soon?

What is it?

It could be that, but this is a really dry area. Drought conditions, So CA. It does get some sprinklers in the morning for a short time, but it's not a wetland at all. It must be a weed? There is another growing about 50' away from it.

An unknown lily popped up close to it, but that one for sure is a lily. This is a mystery, and perhaps you have solved it. It might look great in flower arrangements.

    Thanks!

I think it's Cyperus difformis, which is considered a weed in CA.

Well, hoovb, you must be correct. A weed! Nothing exotic! Bummer! I shall be pulling the two weeds currently growing. No seeds yet! I shall think about putting something lily-like in their places. There already is a row of Peter Pan Agapanthus all bloomie and pretty!

Thank you all for the ID!
