What is this giant tuber?

Bought a house last year and the gardens are horribly overgrown. I was hacking and slashing my way through a shade bed today and wouldnt have noticed this except for the gigantic root. Probably just a weed, but they are all over that bed and now I'm curious! Thanks!

I can't see the shape of the stems (petioles?) and leaves ...but it looks like rhubarb.

The stems are round, so I don't think its rhubarb. The stems and leaves put me in mind of a bergenia, but aren't those evergreen?

It looks like a pokeweed root.
