Name that small tree or shrub?

Found on April 27 this year on the banks of the Potomac River between Great Falls and Carderock. Looks to me like something in the Ericaceae, but that's as far as I can get. The plant was skinny and about 8 feet tall. I could post more pics if needed. Thanks for any clues.

    Yes, the petals have already fallen hence the unfamiliar look of the flowers. They grow really easily from discarded pits.
