Help with identification

A friend gave me these plants and told me that they have pretty yellow flowers that resemble sunflowers on them in the fall. They are root based plants, not bulbs. Any help would be much appreciated!

Goldenrod?

Looks like Helianthus angustifolius, swamp sunflower.

The plant has oppositely arranged leaves, goldenrod has alternate leaves, btw.

Good to know, haven't seen one in person in years.

I have these and love them. The leaves should feel rough like sandpaper. I cut them back quite a bit in July or they will fall over when they bloom in the fall.
