Small Tree

It was a dark day, so detail is poor. Can you determine the species of this small tree? Leaves were about 3-4 inches across and coarsely toothed. I couldn't tell whether I was looking at unopened flowers or fruit.

It looks like Witch Hazel to me, Hamamelis virginiana.

That's the fruit, following a wonderful bloom period.

RE: Small Tree

Thank you both. I learned about Witch Hazel last year and saw lots of trees when in flower (mostly Nov-Jan here), but had not identified one with fruit and leaves. I would not have guessed they could have so many flowers, so will definitely go back for a look at that robust specimen this November.
