Identify this plant for a friend

A family friend posted these pictures on Facebook and asked what plant this was. No one has come back with an answer! She just moved into this house in MI and it was growing in the landscaping. She wants to make sure it's safe to have around her grandchildren, etc. Any clue what it could be (and it's not the allium in the background, fyi).
