are the leaves alternate or opposite?

It's not horseweed. I pull that out all the time.

Leaves/stems are not hairy, but have a slight sheen (I took the above picture in the rain, so ignore the shinier raindrops). Stem is square in cross-section. Leaves are opposite.

Finally got a picture of it from the side. Hopefully this will make it easier to ID. Thanks for your help.

Yes normally but there is a less vigorous one which is white. I believe called "miss manners".
