RE: Identify, Squash, gourd?

It will be some winter squash. It looks similar to a Carnival Squash, perhaps a hybrid. All squashes are edible although some more tasty than others. Carnival Squash is a very nice one for baking or soup.

RE: Identify, Squash, gourd?

"Carnival" is a good guess. I lean more towards it being "Sweet Dumpling" but either way it is a winter squash and excellent for baking.

RE: Identify, Squash, gourd?

Thank you! What's strange is that it is summer here, and I am NOT KIDDING, hot hot hot, but this is on a vine in a shady area by our carport. We thought it was watermelon at first, then these grew. We do have a decent size garden and a fairly large compost and haven't had a garden for 2 years. We did plant squash, but not specifically this squash. Who knows, but thanks again for the confirmations!!! :)

RE: Identify, Squash, gourd?

If squash seed is open-pollinated, you can get all kinds of random hybrids. Maybe your seed was not a pure strain, or maybe it's a volunteer from the compost. Who knows? Anyway it should taste just as good as any winter squash.

BTW yes it does resemble Sweet Dumpling more.
