What is this bizarre plant?

Came across this plant today in my garden, does anyone recognise it. I'm in southern France. It doesn't have any leaves just these spikes, similar to a verbascum but quite dull!

    ooo yes could well be, the name broomrape would fit as I have tons of broom around - hate the stuff - sounds like this could actually kill it hehe
