I thought I knew what this was, until I looked more closely. It was obviously there last year, but I don't remember it. It's not one of our typical weeds, unless a less mature plant looks totally different and I just have always been fortunate to pull it before it "grew up." I've been thinking about this plant for 3 days now...normally I would remember something I planted in that amount of time.

Looks like a cut leaved elder to me.

Well, that explains a few things! Thank you, Flora. It must have hitched along with another plant I bought, grew in secret, then killed the very plant that brought it along. I'm not surprised it could have survived last winter, but I am amazed that it survived the previous one or two. No wonder I thought the stems look familiar...we have surrounded our yard with native elder...but I never thought to see if it could have been some other elder, because it shouldn't be here! Now to decide what to do with it...it can't stay there for sure. If it's potentially invasive...i.e. escape into the woods, I guess I need to destroy it. It is lovely, though.
