Persimmon, Diospyros kaki. Unusual outdoors in N Europe. I've seen them in N Italy in fruit. It is definitely not a Medlar/Mespilus.

It will be interesting to see if it sets any fruit and whether it ripens. I see it is on sale in the UK but I have never, ever seen it growing here. But that's not to say it doesn't survive somewhere.

I've read that harvesting is simular as with Mespilus germanica, after the leaves have fallen....

Wow. Thanks for remembering. I wonder if they'll ripen. Probably not enough warm weather left. I've seen ripe ones hanging on a tree in Bergamo in the snow just before Christmas. They looked wonderful. But they have much hotter summers than you and I do.

(That was also the first place I ever smelled Ginkgo fruits. What a stench.)
