pesky weed/grass with black dusty seed on top

We have a invader in our yard the has a black dusty top that stains shoes when walked through. here is a pic of one that I just pulled. can someone help me identify, I have searched and search with no luck.

I know absolutely nothing about the grasses of Tennessee but this looks to me like a grass infected with a smut type fungus, so not typical of the species (whatever it is!)

Might be a Digitaria sp. (Crabgrass). Try to find a healthy plant without the fungus for comparison.

Thanks I was looking down the wrong path, I guess I have a yard full of smut :) what are the neighbors going to say
