What perennial is this???

I always hit the local garden centers at the end of fall for their sale items...usually the pots have died back and dont have any id on them...not bad considering I can get them for about 1.00 a pot...as long as the roots look good, I may buy a few for a spring time surprize :)
This one in particular was in a 2 gallon pot...which I planted with others, pots and all, in a holding bed for the winter. It sprouted in the spring as very lush, almost lettuce like bushy foliage. Has been planted in my garden now for about 8 weeks. ...and it is huge! Almost 4 ft tall now, and I have nothing that resembles it. No flower buds yet, but still nice foliage. I thought It was going to be some type of aster...clueless on this one. Any help is appreciated :)

I should note that the stem is square....

Yes, if it has square stems, definitely Silphium Perfoliatum.

I've had a single plant for about 10 years but, despite it producing hundreds of seeds, they're all 'empty'. Apparently you need two plants that are genetically different in order to reproduce.

Also, for the first few years it was practically slug/snail free. But in recent years the little bu**ers decimate the leaves which, being rough, was something I would have thought wouldn't appeal to them.

Mine came from seed sown in autumn, sprouted in the spring, and flowered the same year. It will reach up to 7 foot plus.

Posted this on the other post as well....
Thank you for the reply! It does look VERY similar all except for the actual "cup" part :) The leaves jut out on fairly long stems from the main plant...wondering if there is a similar cultivar of the aster family...

I only had one Silphium, now I have them popping up everywhere. And they are really tough to pull. Don't let them go to seed unless you want a garden full.
