What tree is this? Will it survive?

Hello Friends and Experts,
I live in the North Texas area (Frisco). I have a young tree in my front yard (attaching picture showing the damage).

The bark started peeling off at the base of this tree around July/August last year. It's been getting worse since then, even though it looks green and healty at the branch/leaf level. This is happening on the northeast side where there is little sun exposure. The south and west sides, which receive most of the direct sun light in the afternoon are fine. I want to know if the tree will survive. Are there corrective acitons that I could take, if not what should I plan to do?

Impossible to tell just from the bark what type of tree this is. But it IS possible to say that your tree is ailing and should be looked at by a professional arborist. Large chunks of bark falling off at ground level is usually indicative of some serious, even fatal, problems.

Looks like it's buried too deep, which can cause the trunk to end up like that.

You can see the curl of healing bark on the left side. This tree has been struggling for a while. I suspect it isn't going to make it.

Looks like it was planted way too deep initially, and then suffered some major damage (lawn mower?) If you like the tree, you could remove some of the soil around the base to expose the root flare - which could extend the life of the tree a little. Nevertheless, I think the tree won't survive more than a couple of years.
