 o
Mystery Perennial.....id help please

I always hit the local garden centers at the end of fall for their sale items...usually the pots have died back and dont have any id on them...not bad considering I can get them for about 1.00 a pot...as long as the roots look good, I may buy a few for a spring time surprize :)
This one in particular was in a 2 gallon pot...which I planted with others, pots and all, in a holding bed for the winter. It sprouted in the spring as very lush, almost lettuce like bushy foliage. Has been planted in my garden now for about 8 weeks. ...and it is huge! Almost 4 ft tall now, and I have nothing that resembles it. No flower buds yet, but still nice foliage. I thought It was going to be some type of aster or lobelia...clueless on this one. Any help is appreciated :) The stem is square....

Maybe I'm seeing cup plant everywhere I look, but that's what I think you have - Silphium perfoliatum. That strong square stem, the Jurassic leaves - see what you think at the link.

Here is a link that might be useful: Take a look

Thank you for the reply! It does look VERY similar all except for the actual "cup" part :) The leaves jut out on fairly long stems from the main plant...wondering if there is a similar cultivar of the aster family...

A botanist friend said it is Silphium perfoliatum. There are plants like this in the Arkansas River valley that lack the perfoliate-ness.
