Identify Plant w/ Reddish New Growth Leaves

We're located in the Watertown, NY area. The attached photo shows the part of the plant growing under the deck on the left and the part growing above the deck (the newer growth) on the right. This plant is growing in the wild, under our deck. It is the kind of plant that dies to the ground come winter. I didn't see any thorns, fruits, flowers, or seeds. The new growth, at the top of the plant and above our deck, is shiny and reddish. The older leaves are green. The back of the leaves are about the same coloring/shininess as the front; they aren't hairy. The leaves alternate along the stem and have very small ridges along the edge of the leaf. I did a Google search and would say that the leaves are cordiform or cordate in shape. Currently the plant is about 4' tall. Thank you in advance!
