 o
wild strawberries?

I found these growing in the lawn behind my apartment. I think these are wild strawberries. Last month i found it had some red small (about 1cm) berries on them which the birds were snacking on. I read about wild strawberries, and I thought I would try to grow these in my balcony. Today when I went to get some, I saw yellow dusty stuff on most of the leaves undersides (rust fungus?) I got these which looked relatively free, dunked it in soap water. Now am not sure if I want to risk introducing the disease (if any) to my plants. I have flowering plants and 4 tomatoes and few thai pepper plants in my balcony. Are these the ones that have amazingly sweet berries?? Is it worth it? Am currently planning to keep them in a yogurt container, until I decide to keep them or dispose them.

aaargh! Even the deceptively clean looking leaves did have a tiny yellow spot on it. Apparently its called plant rust and is destructive. I microwaved it and disposed it. :'( No really wild strawberries for me.

Not necessarily.

Here is a link that might be useful: Potentilla indica

I considered that species but it fruits later in the year. Although now that I think about the OP didn't give their location.

Compare images of Fragaria virginiana and Potentilla indica. They look quite different once you are familiar with both. If still not sure post a picture of the fruit.

Does anyone else think there are 2 different plants there? The thing on the right looks quite different to me.

RE: wild strawberries?

Yes, I think that big one looks like a tree seedling. The others ones remind me of Duchesnea, is that the same as Potentilla? I know they're always reclassifying things.

RE: wild strawberries?

Yup. Looks like a seedling or shoot of some woody plant. The rest are the strawberries - or not since I wasn't sure as to what they were. I would have liked to see a closer picture or a different angle.
